In 1985, Hunt Midwest Enterprises, Inc. was formed through the merger of Mid-America Enterprises, which operated the Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun themed amusement parks, and Great Midwest Corporation’s mining and real estate operations.  A focused growth strategy on the mining and real estate operations led to the sale of Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun in 1995.

Since that time, Hunt Midwest Enterprises has increased residential developments from one project covering 300 acres to 12 current and 4 completed developments on over 3,300 acres; added just under two million square feet of underground buildings to SubTropolis; increased industrial and commercial ground inventory by more than 500 acres; grew the Mining company from three locations in 1985 to over 40; and in 2004, Hunt Midwest Mining, Inc., merged with Martin Marietta Materials to form a new company called Hunt Martin Materials, L.L.C. to produce and market crushed limestone throughout the entire Kansas City region.

Hunt Midwest’s headquarters is located within the company’s SubTropolis underground business complex.
